Energy generated by heat stored beneath the Earth’s surface, which includes natural steam, hot water, hot rocks or lava. The hot water or steam can be piped to the surface and then used to turn a steam turbine to generate electricity. It can also be obtained by piping water underground to extract heat from hot, dry rocks. the heat is then returned to the surface to turn a steam turbine and generate electricity. Geothermal energy can be used directly for heating or to produce electric power.
